Florida law makes it mandatory to have your vehicle insured.

There are many types of auto insurance coverages. Knowing how your insurance policy works can help you recover the loss you encounter when you are involved in an auto accident.

Types of auto insurance coverage:

  1. Personal Injury Protection (PIP): Mandatory. Florida requires you to be covered for at least $10,000 for PIP.  PIP coverage pays for 80% of the medical bills qualified as necessary, 60% for loss wages, 100% for replacement services (i.e. child care, home or garden maintenance) , and $5,000 for death benefits.  PIP was created to help Floridians reduced the need to litigate for compensation caused by an auto accident.
  2. Property Damage (PD): Mandatory. Florida requires you to be covered for at least $10,000 for PD.  PD pays for the damages to the car and possessions of the other party in an accident in which it is determined that you were at fault.
  3. Bodily Injury (BI): BI pays for the bodily injury or death caused by your vehicle to the other party at the time of the auto accident.
  4. Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM): UM pays for the bodily injury caused to you, members of your family, or any other occupant in your covered vehicle, by the other driver that was at fault.
  5. Collision Coverage: this pays for the repairs or replacement of your vehicle if you collide with another vehicle or object or it overturns. Collision losses are paid regardless of who is at fault. It does not cover bodily injury only property damages to a covered vehicle.
  6. Comprehensive Coverage: this pays for loss or damage to your covered vehicle caused by any event other than a collision (i.e. fire, theft, windstorm, vandalism, or flooding).
  7. Medical Payment: this pays for medical expenses incurred by the insured because of bodily injury caused by an accident.  It also covers the amount exceeding the PIP’s limit up to the benefits limit for medical treatments.
