Battery
A battery occurs when the wrongdoer intentionally inflicts a harmful or offensive contact to a person or to something closely associated/connected with that person that causes an injury. The victim does not have to be aware of the harmful or offensive contact (i.e. the wrongdoer hits the victim while the victim is sleeping).
Separate from any criminal prosecution for battery, a victim may pursue civil damages for injuries caused by the intentional act.
Battery Examples:
- Punching a person
- Setting up a trap for a person to fall in
- Pulling a chair from under a person
- Ordering a dog to attack
